Tesla Model S vehicle owners who want a little more wind in their hair now have the opportunity to turn that hard top into a convertible. Newport Convertible Engineering, a Huntington Beach company that turns existing coupes and sedans into convertibles, is now offering the option for the Model S.
The company said this week that a Chinese investor has already ordered 100 conversions.
The process is a pricey one with buyers supplying the vehicle and shipping it to California for the change.
Convertible production will begin in California, Dubai and Barcelona in July.
Mega said it has also asked to work with Tesla on a joint venture to convert an additional 5,000 Model S convertibles, saying it expects to make an announcement on April 18.
Autopilot is at the vanguard of self-driving automotive technology.
It allows the Model S to steer within a lane, change lanes with the tap of a turn signal and parallel park on command.
Tesla touts the feature as helping to avoid crashes from the front and sides, along with preventing the car from wandering off the road.
It can also help the driver find a parking space.
The Tesla Model S convertible 2 was a handsome and sleek design when it launched in 2012, and it remains so today. It’s now a part of the backdrop in high-dollar and tech-forward areas, and often doesn’t attract the notice it would have four years ago–at least until it rockets away from whatever other cars are in the vicinity.
The Autopilot features are progressively enabled over time with software updates. When Autopilot debuted last October, Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk warned that “hands-off” driving was not recommended. However, Musk said earlier this month that Autopilot “is probably better than human at this point in highway driving.”He added: “It is certainly better than a human at staying in the center of the lane.”
